True Vertical Depth (TVD) is the vertical distance from a surface reference point to a point in the wellbore.
In directional and horizontal wells, TVD is different from measured depth because the wellbore does not travel straight down. TVD tells engineers how deep the target is vertically, while measured depth follows the actual drilled path.
